Diploma in Computer Science

Overview

Advances in Artificial Intelligence and Computing are impacting all aspects of daily life, and demand is on the rise for skilled tech young girls and women across a wide range of AI and Computer Science fields in Africa and the globe. The Computer Science & Entrepreneurship Course is designed for young girls and women who have excelled at A ‘level with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects/combination. In addition, who may be disadvantaged to joining the main stream Universities and higher institutions due to tuition and funding related issues.  The Course helps them acquire hands on computer science skills at a deferred payment basis. After graduation, the students are helped to get a job and start paying the course tuition on a monthly instalment.

Designed after the latest software and computer science skills in tech industry and best industrial practices.  The courses provides a rigorous introduction to Website development and management, machine learning, data science, theoretical and project-based learning in computer science and app development understanding, as well as opportunities to dive into the entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed in tech industry in Africa and beyond.

The course is structured semester wise and comprises of two semesters, an internship placement for 3 months and end of the course real-world project.

Prerequisites

  • Young Lady who has finished A’ level in the last three years with one of the STEM subjects as principal subject. You must have excelled in Mathematics as a principal subject.

Notes

This course features classroom videos and assignments online and face-to-face to suit the C-19 pandemic era and the new normal. The content and workload have been structured and sequenced to suit the introductory courses in computers science and app development. The course features:

  • Classroom lecture videos edited and segmented to focus on essential content
  • Problem sets enhanced with additional supports and scaffolding
  • Cohort group connected via a LMS system, providing opportunities to network and collaborate with motivated developers in tech start-up ecosystem and professional in tech industry in Africa.

The Course invites industrial partners and experts to deliver some practical content and best practices in the industry to our students in the mid-term semester.

Delivery Mode: Face -to- Face & Online (50/50)

 

Online Program Materials

Online program materials are available on the first day of the course (August 6, 2021). A course syllabus and invitation to an optional Orientation/Q&A Webinar will be sent August 10-14th prior to the course start.

Assignments

To successfully complete the program, participants will complete and pass at least six assignments (mix of programming assignments and written questions) to be able to sit end of semester examinations.

This course is strictly currently be available to young girls and women learners in Uganda.
